Alexandre Tharaud is not just a poet of the piano, he is an intrepid musical explorer - as this three-album collection, Le Poète du Piano, demonstrates. "I feel as though I have played my life through my recordings," he says. "Each one has constituted an important, if not fundamental step in my development as an artist."

Over nearly 30 years his recordings have ranged wide: from masters of the baroque via the Classical, Romantic and Modern eras to cutting-edge composers of today ... from pillars of the repertoire by composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Rachmaninov to numbers by The Beach Boys and French chansonnière Barbara.

Le Poète du Piano complements recordings familiar from Tharaud's extensive discography with a wealth of material that is new or previously unreleased. This includes some of the pianist's own compositions, his transcriptions of orchestral works by Mahler and Debussy, and a rediscovered miniature by Poulenc.

"Music touches the essence of our being," says Tharaud. "It connects us to distant, unconscious emotions that cause something to explode within us. When there is nothing more I can say, I go to the piano. It is my language. That is my reason for being a pianist."
